At Local Lok, we’ve always believed that travel should do more than just take you places, it should also leave those places better than we found them. That is why we’re proud to announce that we’re officially signing a Sustainability Pledge, reaffirming our commitment to responsible tourism, eco-conscious living, and community-first hospitality.

Why This Matters
Varanasi is more than just a destination, it’s a living, breathing cultural heritage site. But like many beloved places, it’s facing the brunt of climate change: over-tourism, and increasing waste. As a homegrown poshtel rooted in this sacred city, we feel a deep responsibility to protect its essence, for locals, for travelers, and for generations to come.
How We Commit to This Pledge:
Sourcing Locally
From the ingredients in our café, which are mostly sourced from local farmers and vendors to our collaboration with Banarasi artisans and small businesses, we strive to support the people who make this city unique. While some of our antique pieces come from beyond Banaras, their stories still resonate deeply with our mission to preserve and celebrate timeless craftsmanship.
Thoughtful Hospitality
We’re committed to creating experiences that are meaningful, not wasteful. That means reducing single-use plastics, conserving water and energy, and choosing biodegradable sustainable alternatives like our earthen pots and straw ceilings.

Waste Management
We separate our waste at the source, sorting it into biodegradable and plastic waste to ensure proper disposal and recycling. Kitchen scraps are composted and we’re always looking for creative ways to reduce what we leave behind
Recycled/ Upcycled Furniture
Many of the pieces at Local Lok have lived past lives: our recycled and upcycled furniture includes repurposed wood, vintage finds, and locally restored antiques. Instead of buying new, we choose to reimagine old materials, giving them fresh purpose while reducing our carbon footprint.

Community First
Most of our team members hail from Varanasi itself. By providing local employment, we ensure that the growth of Local Lok directly benefits the community we’re rooted in.
What This Means for You
Expect even more thoughtful experiences: from upcycled interiors to farm-to-table menus, all crafted with care for the planet and its people. Enjoy locally rooted stays, sustainable comforts, and community-driven stories woven into every corner.

Join Us on This Journey
We know sustainability isn’t a destination, it’s a process. But with every choice we make together, we get closer to a better, more balanced future. We’re not just signing a pledge on paper; we’re making a promise to Banaras and to all of you who make Local Lok what it is.
If you believe staying local means caring for the planet, you’re with us.
