Walls That Talk: The Murals and Messages of Local Lok

At Local Lok, we don’t just decorate walls, we honour stories. Every mural, motif, and stroke of paint is an invitation to look deeper into Banaras, into yourself, and into the wisdom that quietly lingers in these lanes.

The Aghori Wall: Finding Divinity in the Unexpected

One of our most talked-about murals features the mysterious world of the Aghoris: ascetics of Varanasi who transcend fear, judgment, and convention. It’s more than an aesthetic; it’s a reminder of radical acceptance.

The Aghoris believe in seeing the divine in everything, even in death and decay. They smear ashes of the dead on themselves, not out of shock value, but to break the illusion of separation.

The Crowd Mural: Where Everyone Belongs

Painted on the staircase wall, this mural is a dense, colourful crowd of everyday people. No one’s famous. No one’s leading. They’re just present. It reminds us of the ghats at dusk, the alleys at rush hour, and the slow-moving lines at chai stalls, full of life, always moving, never in a hurry.

You’ll spot saris, school bags, shopkeepers, couples, and kids. It’s Varanasi in motion, but also a quiet celebration of how this city holds space for everyone the loud, the lost, the local, and the visitor.

The Abstract Mural: Many Selves, One Moment

Upstairs, you’ll find a very different mood, an abstract mural of overlapping human figures in muted tones. It’s quiet, surreal, and deeply reflective.

Inspired by the new wave of art in Banaras, this piece represents how the city layers identities. You don’t come here and stay the same. You merge. You sit with parts of yourself you forgot. You become someone new or maybe more yourself than ever.

Our Philosophy: Murals That Meet You Where You Are

Whether you’re sipping chai in the common room, journaling on the terrace, or just walking past the reception, these walls are always saying something. They don’t preach. They provoke. They don’t guide. They gently nudge.

Each mural at Local Lok was created with intention, cultural memory, and emotion, not for Instagram (though we love that too), but for impact.
